Indonesia’s ride-hailing and payments unicorn <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/tag/Go-Jek/">Go-Jek</a> has launched the beta version of its app in Singapore, marking the start of a gradual roll-out of the company’s service in the home base of its arch rival, Grab.
According to a release, the beta version of Go-Jek&#8217;s app will be made available for download from iOS and Android app stores in Singapore. Users of the app will be taken in phases, with &#8216;hundreds of thousands&#8217; of customers expected to register by the end of the beta period. Go-Jek expects to fully launch in Singapore by early 2019.
“We are launching in beta for now, while we fine-tune our service to make sure it meets the high standards expected by Singaporeans. As such, we are asking all users, whether drivers or passengers, to provide us with ongoing feedback as we work towards creating the best possible service for the country,” said Go-Jek president, Andre Soelistyo.
The beta app launch also kickstarts Go-Jek’s regional strategic partnership with its Southeast Asia&#8217;s largest lender DBS.
The collaboration will see DBS/POSB customers in Singapore eligible for Go-Jek&#8217;s services, and will receive a S$5 voucher credit for each of their first two rides.
“We are thrilled to bring to our customers privileged access to GO-JEK’s highly-anticipated ride-hailing services,” said Shee Tse Koon, Group Head of Strategy and Planning, DBS Bank. “With this new collaboration, DBS and POSB customers will have more choices for their daily commutes.
Singapore&#8217;s ride-hailing market is suffering from a lack of competition after Grab acquired the Southeast Asian operation of Uber in March. The move gave Grab the lion’s share of the ride-hailing market in Singapore, which earned it a $4.7-million wrap on the knuckles from the city-state’s competition watchdog in September.
Apart from Singapore, Go-Jek has also launched in Vietnam under the brand name Go-Viet, which focuses on motorcycle hailing and courier delivery services. Soelistyo added that Go-Jek is planning to launch its beta phase in Thailand in a few weeks.
In September,,Go-Jek hit a roadblock in its expansion plan to the Philippines after the country’s transportation authority rejected the company’s application, citing an existing moratorium on accrediting transport network companies.
Go-Jek is reported to be in talks to raise at least $2 billion to boost its international expansion plans.
When asked about the cost of customer acquisition in Southeast Asia, Soelistyo said that he was not concerned, since Uber and Grab did most of the leg work prior their entry into the market. He added that the promotions and concessions in Singapore will be shared between Go-Jek and DBS.
