Japanese private equity firm <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=J-STAR" target="_blank" rel="noopener">J-STAR</a> has announced that it has acquired Tokyo-based fashion retailer <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=WEGO+Co+Ltd" target="_blank" rel="noopener">WEGO Co Ltd</a> which has 185-store network in the country with annual sales of over 35 billion yen ($308.7 million).
J-Star conducted the acquisition through WG Holdings, whose shareholders are J-STAR No. 3 SS, LP and other funds that receive investment-related services from J-STAR, it said in a notice.
The announcement comes on the heels of WEGO’s plans to restructure the businesses in a corporate group and improve its existing store network in Japan and abroad.
“WEGO will work on improving the efficiency of its e-commerce channel. In addition, WEGO plans to enhance the trend creation capabilities by renewing existing stores and revitalizing the overseas businesses,” as per the J-Star statement.
The line of fashion brands under WEGO include PUNYUS, WC, GIORDANO, DAMMY, DING and Denime.
Following the deal, the trade name of WG Holdings would be changed to WEGO and WEGO Co Ltd’s name would be amended to WGL Co Ltd.
Global Professional Partners Co., Ltd., Nagashima Ohno Tsunematsu Law Firm, KPMG FAS Co., Ltd. and Alestra Partners Co., Ltd advised J-Star on the transaction.
J-STAR is involved in private equity investments, targeting corporate value enhancement via acquiring management rights. J-STAR has invested in over 49 transactions in various industries such as consumer durables, services, 
healthcare, media, and manufacturing.
