Japanese trading house Mitsubishi Corp is considering taking a majority stake in Lawson Inc to make the Japanese convenient store operator a subsidiary, the companies said on Thursday.
In a statement, both companies said Mitsubishi was considering a takeover, but no decision had been made.
One source with knowledge of the talks told Reuters Mitsubishi was planning to raise its stake in Lawson to over 50 percent.
Shares in Lawson jumped 7 percent when they resumed trading following an earlier suspension on the Tokyo Stock Exchange early on Thursday.
Lawson is one of Japan&#8217;s biggest convenience store chains. The company also operates stores in China, Indonesia and other countries but has been struggling to replicate its domestic success overseas.
