Thailand’s largest movie theatre chain <a style="color: #000080" href="http://www.majorcineplex.com/">Major Cineplex Group (MAJOR)</a> is setting up a joint venture firm with South Korea’s movie production house <a style="color: #000080" href="http://en.cjenm.com/">CJ E&amp;M Co</a>.
The JV &#8211; CJ Major Entertainment Co &#8211; will operate movie production business in Thailand.
With a registered capital of 100 million baht, the Thai firm holds 49 per cent while the Korean partner holds the rest in the JV.
MAJOR’s chief executive Vicha Poolvaraluck said, CJ E&amp;M is one of Asia’s leading entertainment content companies and South Korea’s largest movie maker, which has followed the JV route to make movies in more than 10 countries.
The joint venture is expected to make the Thai film industry competitive in the international level, he cited. Over the next five years, they plan to produce 15-20 Thai movies with an estimated investment of 1 billion baht.
“Thailand’s film market is very attractive and it is larger than other countries in ASEAN. Apart from Korean and Chinese films, we believe Thai films have high potential to export and compete in the global market,” Jeong Tae-sung, CEO of CJ E&amp;M Film Division, said.
MAJOR currently runs 606 screens and plans to increase to 1,000 screens in the next five years. Of this, 900 screens will be operated in Thailand and the remaining 100 screens will come up in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam.
To date, MAJOR has 92 cinemas with 606 screens and 140,584 seats. Around 253 screens are in Bangkok, 341 screens in other 38 provinces, 7 screens in Cambodia and 12 screens in Laos.
