Indonesia&#8217;s news reader app <a style="color: #000080;" href="https://www.kurio.co.id/">Kurio</a> has secured $5 million in its Series B strategic investment round from Tokyo-listed <a style="color: #000080;" href="https://gunosy.com/">Gunosy</a>, which is also a news curation service.
With this investment, Gunosy, which completed its IPO on Tokyo Stock Exchange last year, is looking to expand its reach in Indonesia, a 100-million strong Internet user base that offers an attractive opportunity for mobile-based apps and digital advertising players.
A TechCrunch report says, the Series B round values Kurio at $12 million.
In previous rounds, Kurio, founded in 2013, raised funding from Japan&#8217;s <a style="color: #000080;" href="https://www.cyberagentventures.com/en/">CyberAgent Ventures</a> and a number of angel investors in 2014.
&#8220;Gunosy&#8217;s background in big data, machine learning technology and data driven metrics can help our growth,&#8221; David Wayne Ika, Founder &amp; CEO, Kurio said, in a statement.
Ika said, Kurio and Gunosy would work to develop new products, increase the number of users and the development team. The two new-reading apps will jointly work on building their reach in Indonesia and the south-east Asian region, which has a 700-million population base.
In its home market, Kurio has teamed up with hundreds of noted online publishers to provide their content to end users.
Kurio is targeting to be a platform for publishers who can distribute their content to a wider audience by riding on its app. According to Kurio, its key differentiator is its ability to provide focussed and relevant news based on user preferences.
