Micron Technology (Micron &#8211; NASDAQ:MU) will invest about $ four billion to expand its fabrication plant in Singapore, the company said, marking one of the largest investments in the semiconductor space in the city state.
The chipmaker said it plans to add another 255,000 square feet of clean room space to its fabrication facility in Singapore.
According to the company, the expansion would facilitate efficient implementation of 3D NAND (a type of flash memory) production at the Singapore facility; while giving it the flexibility to gradually add incremental capacity in response to market requirements.
In addition, the space would enable production of storage class and other memory technologies, the company said.
“The company currently anticipates spending about $50 million in the fiscal 2015 for initial design and construction. At completion and subject to market conditions, the total cost for this expansion is expected to be approximately $ four billion incurred over a number of years starting in fiscal 2016. The Company’s capital spending guidance for fiscal 2015 remains unchanged at $3.6 billion to $ four billion,” Micron Technology, Inc said in its in its 8-K filing with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission last week.
The company further added that construction of the additional space is expected to begin in fiscal 2015 with initial manufacturing output likely in fiscal 2017.
