Newly-established private equity firm <a class="tinymce-colortext" style="color: #000080;" href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/tag/nexus-point-capital/">Nexus Point Capital</a> has reportedly reached the first close at over $200 million for its debut fund.
The firm, founded by former <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/tag/mbk-partners/">MBK Partners</a> executive Kuo-Chan Kung, has raised more than $200 million for the Greater China fund, targeting mid-market buyouts, according to AVCJ.
The final fundraising goal is $750 million, the news report said.
Apart from mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, the fund will also look at cross-border opportunities that benefit Asia’s growth of consumption and the middle class.
It has a laser focus on media, financial services, consumer, healthcare, environmental and education.
Kung formed Nexus Point earlier this year in Hong Kong and invited Richard Wong, Morgan Stanley’s co-head of mergers and acquisitions in Asia, and Min Li, Bain Capital Asia’s head of health care practice, as partners. Bain Capital Asia’s former CFO Raman Yiu has also joined the firm in the same position.
The founder had been taking charge of investments in Greater China at MBK Partners until he stepped down in October 2016.
He has 25 years in the industry, having been with Carlyle Asia Partners and McKinsey prior to MBK.
North Asia private equity firm MBK has recently hired ex-Deutsche Bank executive Stephen Le as its special situations fund partner.
