Kuala Lumpur-based private equity firm Creador has hit the first close for its fourth fund at $430 million, this portal has learnt.
Creador IV was launched this February with a target of $500 million to be invested in South and Southeast Asia. An industry source told DEALSTREETASIA that Creador will be hitting 95 per cent of the target by the end of this month with &#8220;a small portion&#8221; to be concluded in October.
Creador had previously said that it expects to have a final close for Creador IV &#8211; the biggest vehicle raised by the firm &#8211; by the end of the year. Its core markets are India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines.
Creador founder and CEO Brahmal Vasudevan had also told this portal earlier that about one-fifth of the $500-million vehicle will be <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/stories/creador-vietnam-investment-brahmal-92713/">allocated to Vietnam</a> over the next three years.
The PE firm made its first investment in Vietnam this year by pumping in $43.8 million into mobile and consumer electronics retailer Mobile World (MWG).
Creador IV&#8217;s predecessor, Creador III, reached its hard cap at $415 million last year and is now over 85 per cent deployed. The private equity firm&#8217;s first fund had raised $130 million in 2013, followed by $331 million for the second fund, with commitments from the likes of Hamilton Lane, Siguler Guff, and Quilvest, as well as a Malaysian pension fund and a US-based endowment fund.
Founded in 2011, the firm focuses on long-term investments in growth-oriented companies in South and Southeast Asia and has invested in 27 firms across the region.
In its home market Malaysia late last year, it invested in <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/stories/creador-invests-13m-malaysian-bakery-chain-bake-yen-79419/">Bake With Yen Group</a>, putting in $13 million to pick up an undisclosed stake. Further, in February this year, its portfolio company Malaysian retail pharmacy chain RedCap Pharmacy <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/stories/malaysia-creador-redcap-merges-big-pharmacy-91829/">merged</a> with local pharma retailer BIG Pharmacy.
On the exit front, Creador recently <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/stories/malaysia-actis-invests-in-ghl-systems-69256/">exited its investment</a> in Malaysian payments company GHL Systems Bhd to Actis, with a return of 2.8x and an IRR of 40 per cent in Malaysian ringgit terms.
