The largest US pension fund CalPERS has offered its chief investment officer job to Ben Meng while State Street has appointed Michele Hardeman as head of global markets for Asia Pacific.
<h3>US pension fund CalPERS names Ben Meng as CIO</h3>
US pension fund <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/tag/CalPERS/">CalPERS</a> has named Ben Meng, deputy CIO of China’s State Administration of Foreign Exchange, as its chief investment officer, according to a Wall Street Journal report.
Meng previously worked for the California pension fund earlier this decade. He left the fund in late 2015 to join the Chinese government agency, which is in charge of the country&#8217;s $3-trillion foreign reserves.
According to the portal, Meng said in an interaction that he is a US citizen working at the Chinese agency as a foreign contractor. He said he had no comment on the hiring process.
The selection of Meng would place a familiar face in charge of $360 billion in assets managed for police officers, firefighters and other public workers across the state of California.
CalPERS in June committed $300 million to the new Asia-focused fund of global buyout firm TPG Capital Management, according to a disclosure. CalPERS’ contribution to TPG Asia VII follows other recent Asia-focused commitment by pension funds.
The California pension fund recently also announced that it is set to make private equity investments through a new and separate entity known as CalPERS Direct, which will pour as much as $13 billion a year into non-public companies.
<h3>State Street appoints Asia Pacific head</h3>
US-based financial services provider <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/tag/State-Street/">State Street Corporation </a>(State Street) has appointed Michele Hardeman as head of global markets for Asia Pacific region, according to an official announcement.
Hardeman, who has relocated to Hong Kong from Boston, previously served as head of foreign exchange sales for State Street Global Markets.
In her new role, Hardeman would be responsible for leading the strategic direction, sales, service and operations of the Global Markets business in Asia-Pacific.
She will report to Wai-Kwong Seck, chief executive officer for Asia-Pacific, and Lou Maiuri, global head of Global Markets.
“Michele has more than 20 years of experience in capital markets across Australia and the US,” said Seck. “Her global experience and deep understanding of the challenges clients face will enhance our Global Markets capabilities in the region.”
State Street is one of the world&#8217;s leading providers of financial services to institutional investors, including investment servicing, investment management and investment research and trading.
