Singapore state investment firm <a href="http://www.temasek.com.sg" target="_blank">Temasek Holdings Pte </a>Ltd and Malaysian deal maker Richard Ong will jointly buy $1 billion of convertible notes issued by Houston-based <a href="http://www.cheniere.com/" target="_blank">Cheniere Energy Inc</a>.
Richard Ong, who was earlier with Goldman Sachs and his brother Charles, the former chief investment officer with Temesek, now run the Hong-Kong based Asian buyout firm <a href="http://www.rrjcap.com" target="_blank">RRJ Capital</a>.
RRJ has the option to transfer part of the notes – which have a six and a half year maturity, offering 4.875% interest per annum &#8211; to Temasek Holdings, the statement added. This is equivalent to about 130% of the US energy company’s closing price on Monday.
Cheniere Energy will use the proceeds from these convertible notes to partly fund its liquefaction project, which on completion is expected to have an annual output of 13.5 mtpa.
This marks the second instance of Temasek teaming up with RRJ Capital. Earlier this year, they had jointly bought equity stake worth €1.3 billion in <a href="http://www.ing.com" target="_blank">ING’s </a>Group&#8217;s European and Japanese insurance arm NN Group.
RRJ and Temasek had earlier invested in Cheniere, jointly, in 2012, when they bought 19.8% stake, but the Singapore state investment firm had sold its holdings in the US based energy company last year. Cheniere had used this round of funding to build the US’s first LNG export facility at Sabine Pass, Louisiana.
