Nest Tech managing partner Soe Moe Kyaw Oo told DEALSTREETASIA, in an interaction, that the fund targets to invest at seed-to-early growth stage technology startups equipped with a solid team, viable product and proven traction.
“We don’t expect startups to be cash-flow positive, but we do expect that their finances should be prudently managed,” Oo elaborated.
Nest Tech&#8217;s fund, which has a corpus of several million dollars, is self-funded by Oo, who is also the managing director of clean-tech company Tricorona, previously listed on the Nasdaq OMX Nordic Small Cap List.
Stockholm-headquartered Tricorona manages and reduces the climate impact of organisations through a range of climate services, including climate strategy development and greenhouse gas accounting based on international standards. In 2010, the Swedish firm was bought by U.K. financial services group Barclays Plc.
However, Barclays sold Tricorona back to the company’s management, the UK-headquartered investment bank, two years after it bought the firm for $159 million, Reuters reported then. Oo is the managing director of Tricorona carbon Asset Management Pte Ltd, the Singapore branch of Tricorona Climate Partner AB.
While Oo is still the major shareholder in Tricorona, his focus is now trained on Nest Tech&#8217;s investments. Set up in February 2018, Nest Tech has so far closed three investments and has a couple more in the pipeline. “Nest Tech is sector-agnostic but we do have an interest in education and impact investing,” said Oo.
He is buoyed by the macro fundamentals in the target markets, be it smartphone explosion in Myanmar or Vietnam&#8217;s top tech talent driving the startup ecosystem.
Nest Tech&#8217;s most recent investment was into <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=+Flexible+Pass" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Flexible Pass</a>, a health and fitness platform from Myanmar. Nest Tech joined the six-digit dollar investment round of Flexible Pass with Seed Myanmar and Yangon Capital Partners. Nest Tech typically invests $50,000 to $100,000 in each of its investments.
Its other investments include <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=Edu2Reveiw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Edu2Reveiw</a>, an online education and booking platform from Vietnam, and <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=Trophy+Room" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Trophy Room</a>, a social football gaming and entertainment app. Formerly known as Bet11 and based in Malta, Trophy Room is extending its presence to Singapore and Vietnam.
Oo, who has over 14 years experience in commodity trading, deal origination, finance and commercial negotiations, has worked in London, Stockholm, Singapore and Ho Chi Minh. He is currently based in Singapore.
Taking at a long-term view of its portfolio, Oo said, Nest Tech will look at follow-on rounds in at least two of the three startups it has invested in. “Nest Tech will work with founders to develop and grow their business in the most sustainable way,” said Oo.
“We will continue to support our startups to accelerate their product development and market expansion, and help to facilitate later fundraising,” he added.
