Leading venture capital firms from mainland China and Hong Kong have backed startups from the US in two separate deals.
<h3>ScaleFlux raises $24m in Shunwei Capital-led round</h3>
California-based hardware firm ScaleFlux has raised $25 million in a Series B funding round led by Shunwei Capital and joined by unnamed strategic corporate investors.
Founded in 2014, ScaleFlux provides computational storage subsystems (CSS) at scale. CSS is the foundation for modern data centre infrastructure that provides responsive performance, affordable scaling, and an agile platform for data-driven, compute and storage I/O intensive applications, according to the company website.
“ScaleFlux Computational Storage is poised to revolutionize how the most demanding transactional and analytical data center applications scale and generate revenue for businesses industry-wide,&#8221; said Shunwei Capital founding partner and CEO Tuck Lye Koh.
The startup said it will use the proceeds to accelerate global expansion and new product innovation. The latest investment brings its total funding to over $40 million.
&#8220;This funding will accelerate our Computational Storage deployments in global markets while also expanding the number of applications and use cases we support,&#8221; said ScaleFlux co-founder and CEO Hao Zhong.
<h3>Horizons Ventures leads $4m seed round in Amper Music</h3>
Hong Kong-based venture capital firm Horizons Ventures has led a $4-million seed round in AI-powered music platform Amper Music, according to an announcement on Thursday.
The funding round was joined by Two Sigma Ventures, Advancit Capital, Foundry Group and Kiwi Venture Partners.
Founded by Hollywood film composers Drew Silverstein, Sam Estes, and Michael Hobe, Amper describes itself as an AI composer, performer, and producer that enables users to instantly create and customize original music. It claims to help content creators simplify their workflow and avoid the time, budgetary, and licensing frustrations of stock music.
On its website, the startup notes that its team believes that &#8220;the future of music will be created through collaboration between humans and artificial intelligence&#8221;.
“Music is inherently a cross-cultural and geographically boundless experience,” said Phil Chen, Advisor at Horizon Ventures. “That factor coupled with the rising intrigue of mixing music and machines well positions Amper for global expansion.”
The latest round brings the company&#8217;s total investment to $9 million.
&#8220;Amper’s rapid growth is a testament to how the massive growth of media requires a technological solution for music creation,&#8221; said Amper Music co-founder and CEO Silverstein.
Amper said it will use the latest funding to expand its presence internationally and to double its employee base in the US. Its offices are located in New York and California.
