SoftBank is in discussions to invest up to an additional $30 billion in OpenAI, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter.

Reuters could not immediately verify the report. SoftBank and OpenAI did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for a comment.

Masayoshi Son-led SoftBank in 2025 completed a $41 billion investment in OpenAI, marking one of the largest private funding rounds on record and giving the Japanese firm an estimated 11% stake in the ChatGPT maker.

The deal valued OpenAI at roughly $300 billion on a post-money basis, but a subsequent secondary share sale completed in October valued the company at about $500 billion, according to Pitchbook data.
