Colorado-headquartered cross-reality collaboration startup Spatial has raised $8 million in seed funding from investors including Samsung Electronics-backed investment firm Samsung NEXT.
Spatial is a software platform that leverages augmented reality (AR) to enable workplace collaboration. One of its uses is as a remote presence to enable local and remote workers to interact as if in the same room using lifelike avatars.
Its seed round was joined by iNovia Capital, Uber co-founder Garrett Camp&#8217;s Expa, Joi Ito, Mark Pincus and Andy Hertzfeld.
&#8220;Spatial has built the most advanced augmented reality platform available today,&#8221; said iNovia Capital partner Todd Simpson. &#8220;This is game-changing technology that will undoubtedly advance the future of work, and more broadly, the future of computing.&#8221;
Spatial was founded by Anand Agarawala, the founder of BumpTop which was acquired by Google in 2010, and Jinha Lee, a Korean designer and entrepreneur who introduced the AR computer SpaceTop at TED in 2013.
&#8220;We are harnessing the power of augmented reality to create a combined digital and physical world that will change the way we work together,&#8221; said co-founder and CEO Agarawala.
Ford’s incubator Ford X is piloting the use of Spatial&#8217;s platform at its workplace. The software runs on various AR headsets including Microsoft HoloLens.
Spatial says its use of 3D visualization can be applied across industries like engineering, architecture, manufacturing and other complex domains. The US-based firm also has a presence in Asia, with offices in Japan, Korea, India and China.
Samsung NEXT focuses exclusively on startups developing complementary software and services. It launched the <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=Samsung+NEXT+Q+Fund" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Samsung NEXT Q Fund</a> this year, an early-stage fund for AI companies.
