<a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=Temasek%20International">Temasek International</a>, the management and investment arm of Singapore state investment firm <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=Temasek%20Holdings">Temasek Holdings</a>, has announced the appointment of Dilhan Pillay Sandarasegara as its new chief executive officer.
Pillay will succeed Lee Theng Kiat, who will take over from Ho Ching as chairman of Temasek International effective April 1, 2019, according to a statement Tuesday. Ho remains an executive director and chief executive officer of Temasek Holdings.
“As CEO of Temasek International, Pillay will be responsible for the role of Temasek as an active investor and shareholder. He will also oversee the operations of the firm, and the organisation of its talent and resources to deliver sustainable long term returns for Temasek,” Temasek said.
Since 2010, Pillay has helmed Temasek&#8217;s investment and portfolio management groups, the enterprise development group, and overseen the US and Americas market teams.
Dilhan joined Temasek in September 2010 and is currently deputy CEO of Temasek International.
Prior to Temasek, Pillay was the managing partner of Wong Partnership LLP, one of the largest law firms in Singapore with clients in Singapore and the region. He practised law for over 20 years in the areas of mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance and general corporate law.
Lee, who announced the succession at a staff briefing Tuesday afternoon, said Pillay has the full support of the senior team and the Temasek Holdings Board.
&#8220;Dilhan has the ability to connect the dots, a keen eye for details and practical solutions, and a boldness to break new ground in anticipation of longer-term trends,&#8221; Lee added.
Pillay noted how Temasek has evolved from a decade ago, when he joined the firm. Temasek, he said, now has a more global portfolio and diversified workforce.
“The world is much more connected now. We look at global trends, invest across the world, and are constantly adapting ourselves to stay relevant. We are a builder of businesses, and more importantly, talent,” he said.
On the other hand, Lee, the incoming chairman of Temasek International, will be overseeing the development of Temasek as a &#8220;forward-looking&#8221; institution. He will work closely with Pillay on commercial strategies and portfolio matters.
From S$103 billion in 2005, Temasek’s portfolio reached S$266 billion a decade later. The portfolio rose further to S$308 billion as of March 2018.
Two-thirds of the underlying exposure of the Temasek portfolio was in Asia &#8211; including Singapore (27 per cent) and China (26 per cent). Outside Asia, 22 per cent of the underlying portfolio exposure was to emerging technological trends and opportunities in the US and Europe &#8211; up from 17 per cent in 2015.
