The Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) is planning to set up an office in Singapore as it looks to extend its presence to Asia, according to a <a href="http://www.pionline.com/article/20180625/PRINT/180629918/texas-teachers-looks-to-get-boots-on-ground-in-singapore">report by Pensions &amp; Investments</a>.
The pension fund already deploys about 15 per cent of its $151.4-billion fund in Asia, according to TRS executive director Brian Guthrie who was quoted in the report. It now wants to get “boots on the ground” in the region to gain insight into local markets and to know money managers.
TRS, which opened its first overseas office in London in 2015, has invested $5.8 billion in emerging markets since 2005. The pension fund said in April that it plans to invest an additional $3 billion in emerging markets over three to five years.
Asia has also lately been attracting investment interest from other US-based pension funds like California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPers). The pension fund recently revealed in a disclosure that it has committed $300 million to the new Asia-focused fund of global buyout firm TPG Capital Management.
Meanwhile, the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) recently hiked its exposure to Asian private equity by nearly 27.8 per cent to C$17.1 billion ($13.3 billion) in the year ended March 2018, according to its annual report.
