Thailand&#8217;s IPO market is expected to see lots of action in 2016 thanks to the new rule allowing foreign firms to raise funds on the country&#8217;s bourses.
At least five overseas firms and two infrastructure firms are preparing to submit the first filing and start trading next year, Kesara Manchusree, president of the <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.set.or.th/en/">Stock Exchange of Thailand</a>, said at the International Capital Markets Conference 2015.
“Many companies from CLMV (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam) are interested to raise funds on Thai stock markets. However, we have to consider carefully to minimise risk for investors,” she said.
Amata VN, an industrial estate developer in Vietnam, will be the first foreign firm to launch its IPO in Thailand&#8217;s stock market.
One of the two infrastructural firms will be a hydel plant in Laos and an unspecified project in Vietnam, the president cited.
Meanwhile, Paiboon Nalinthrangkurn, CEO of <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.tiscosec.com/">TISCO Securities</a>, said Thailand should aim to be the first place for companies in the Greater Mekong Subregion to raise funds through IPO given the huge infrastructure finance requirement in these countries.
However, he suggested that Thailand should study regulations and tax structures of the Singapore capital market.
“We should know why few foreign firms are registered in Thailand, while more than 300 are registered in Singapore. We need to improve our regulations and investment climate if we want to attract them,” he said.
Meanwhile, he also added Thai listed companies have high potential to invest in GMS countries. However, the government should support them to scale up their business abroad too.
“Currently, the government only supports SMEs to go abroad to reduce their production cost, and ignore large-sized companies. On the contrary, the government should also give financial support and tax incentives to enable them to compete with other countries,” he said.

Due to the new rule allowing foreign firms to raise fund on Thai bourses, the Thai IPO market is expected to go more buoyant in 2016.
