Siam Cement Group (SCG), one of Thailand’s biggest industrial conglomerate, plans to spend between 200 billion-250 billion baht ( $6.25 billion -$7.8 billion) on its investment in ASEAN countries during 2015-2019.
“Our assets in the ASEAN region account for 17% of our total assets and we would like to increase it to 20% in the future,” said CEO and President, SCG, Kan Trakulhoon.
The investment will include development of Vietnam’s long delayed petrochemical complex on Long Son Island in southern Vietnam. According to Trakulhoon, SCG will be dinalising negotiations with construction contractors, by the end of two months and should be able to start the construction, early next year. The plant is expected to commence operation in 2017-2018.
The $4.5 billion petrochemical complex is a joint venture between SCG, Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (Petrovietnam) and Vietnam National Chemical Corporation (Vinachem).
Meanwhile, the cement production plants in Indonesia and Cambodia are expected to begin operations in 2015, he said , adding that the company had plans to expand its investment into Myanmar and Laos in 2016.
SCG has already set aside an investment outlay of 40 billion-50 billion baht ($ 1.25- $ 1.5 billon for next year. This outlay diea not include the budget for inorganic growth through business takeovers.
In the first nine months of this year, SCG generated a sales revenue of 370.83 billion baht ( $11.58 billion), up 12% from the same period last year, and a net profit of 24.76 billion baht($O.77 billion) down 13% year on year.
However, the sales revenue of its business in ASEAN, (outside Thailand) was recorded at 32.5 billion baht ($ one billion) an increase of 16% on year and accounted for 9% of the group&#8217;s total revenue.
“We expect to see our revenue to reach 488 billion baht ($15.25 billion) this year, higher from our earlier forecast at 486 billion baht ($ 15.18 billion). However, it depends on how soon the government will start its spending to stimulate the country’s economy. Also, this estimated revenue is based on the current currency exchange rate of 32 baht per dollar,” he added.
