<a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.cmctelecom.vn/">CMC Telecom</a>, Vietnam’s fourth largest telecom service provider, will sell a 25 per cent stake to Malaysia’s <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.time.com.my/aboutus/corporateoverview.asp">TIME dotCom Berhad</a> through a strategic investment agreement inked on Friday.
TIME dotCom’s investment is revealed to be $12 million, and will be extended.
The deal makes CMC Telecom, one of the eight subsidiaries of the Hanoi-based technology conglomerate <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.cmc.com.vn/">CMC Corp</a> and Vietnam’s first telecommunications infrastructure company to have an overseas strategic partner. It also marks the first peneration of TIME dotCom in Vietnam.
The Malaysian buyer said the deal has been reached after one year of observation of the Vietnamese partner, which not only displayed a strong growth but also a development strategy consistent with that of TIME DotCom’s investment  outlook.
Under the terms of the agreement, both companies will support each other in developing their technology and services, and connecting with the international telecom infrastructure. Thus, the partnership will create an opportunity for both to tap the customer potential in Malaysia as well as Vietnam.
Afzal Abdul Rahim, chief excutive of TIME dotCom, sees a huge potential in the Vietnam’s telecom market, saying that CMC Telecom is a “perfect partner” to the company’s investment strategy.
Meanwhile, Nguyen Trung Chinh, CMC Corp CEO, said: “Seeking a foreign strategic partner has been in our agenda and this makes CMC Telecom one of the leading telecom infrastructure firms in the region.”
In addition, the cooperation will also enable the Vietnamese internet service provider to enhance its governance ability, adopt advanced technology, and to bring greater value to customers not only in Vietnam but also in neighbouring countries, he added.
Formed in 1996, TIME dotCom has expanded to provide telecom solutions to clients in the Asia Pacific region. The Burma company listed its stock in 2001, and the current market capitalisation stands at $1 billion.
