The $4.85-million (S$6.58 million) fine imposed on Uber Technologies by Singapore&#8217;s anti-trust watchdog has been suspended after an appeal was filed by the ride-hailing major.
According to local reports, the appeal hearing will take place in the second half of this year.
In September 2018, the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore had fined Grab and Uber a combined $9.5 million, ruling that the former’s takeover of the latter’s Southeast Asia operations had substantially decreased competition in the ride-hailing market.
Grab has since paid its share of fine without issuing an appeal.
Last March, the US ride-hailing giant had announced that it was exiting Southeast Asia by selling its regional business to Grab. The deal involved Uber acquiring a 27.5 per cent stake in Grab and a seat on its board.
When contacted, Uber declined to comment on the development.
<h3>Uber opens APAC headquarters </h3>
Uber also launched its Asia Pacific headquarters in Singapore, one year after it exited the region. The hub will support the company&#8217;s operations in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand.
The US ride-hailing company plans to add to its team of 165 employees at the Singapore office.
&#8220;&#8230;one thing is clear as we look to the year ahead — the Asia Pacific region remains a critical Hub for Uber — a source of innovation and hyper growth for current and future businesses, a global exporter of talent, and a culture and diversity champion,&#8221; Uber said in a blog post.
According to local reports, Uber also emphasised that it has no plans to relaunch its services in Southeast Asia.
