The Philippines on Monday suspended the accreditation and operations of ride-hailing firm <a style="color: #000080;" href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=Uber" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Uber</a> for a month.
The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) said Uber had violated its directive to refrain from accepting and activating new drivers.
In July, LTFRB had cracked down on more than 50,000 units of both Uber and its rival <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=Grab" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Grab</a>, that were unaccredited or colorum public utility vehicles.
&#8220;The latest irresponsible act of [Uber] is not about pushing innovation&#8230; but it is about unduly challenging the limit of fair regulation to continue to engage in business in this country, thereby compromising sound business practices,&#8221; the LTFRB said in its order.
It added that Uber&#8217;s violations are creating an uneven playing field for others such as franchise holders of public transport services covering taxis, buses, UV Express and Public Utility Jeepneys, who are also governed by the same regulation.
LTFRB also recommended that Uber &#8220;extend financial assistance to its affected peer-operators during the period of suspension as an expression of good faith&#8221;.
Uber and Grab were recently fined $98,500 (P5 million) each by LTFRB for not complying with regulations including jurisdictional requirements like appearing in hearings and submission of formal offer of exhibits, among others.
