As competition heats up in the ride-hailing space in India, US giant <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=Uber" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Uber</a> is leaving no stone unturned to grab a larger share of the country&#8217;s urban transportation space.
The American company has tied up with Bengaluru-based dockless bicycle sharing platform Yulu to provide users with the option to ride e-bikes and bicycles in the city, it announced on Thursday.
Uber already offers a two-wheeler service called UberMoto but passengers don’t drive these scooters themselves. The service was introduced as a pilot project in March 2016 in Bengaluru. Its Indian rival Ola, too, had invested in scooter-sharing startup Vogo late last year to tap the fast-growing two-wheeler space.
While the Yulu app will not be integrated into Uber, the latter will use its app to redirect users to the registration page of Yulu.
&#8220;Cities in India are seeing traffic get more clogged by the minute, and these micro-mobility options would go a long way in reducing traffic snarls, saving time for the riders, and reducing carbon emissions. The e-bikes can clock a speed of 25 km/hr, and users don’t even require a licence to ride one of these,&#8221; Uber said in a statement.
Launched by former InMobi cofounder Amit Gupta, RK Mishra, Hemant Gupta, and Naveen Dachuri in 2017, Yulu started off as a bicycle-sharing startup. In February this year, it also expanded its offerings to include dockless, lithium-powered scooters it calls Yulu Miracle. According to Crunchbase, Yulu has raised $7 million in funding to date.
The dockless bicycles can be rented on a pay-per-use basis. Yulu e-bikes can be unlocked with QR codes. As a promotional move, Uber is offering the first three rides on these bikes for free.
According to a BloombergQuint report, Uber has already started informing its customers about the pilot in Bengaluru, which is going to last about six months.
For Uber, this is its first such initiative in India. It has been investing in scooter rental firms in the US. In April last year, the ride-hailing company acquired New York-based e-bike startup Jump. Uber also participated in a $335-million funding round for electric scooter rental company Lime in June last year.
