In a high-profile exit, Uber&#8217;s Asia Pacific head Amit Jain has tendered his resignation.
According to a statement issued by the US ride-hailing giant, Jain will leave Uber at the end of May to spend time with his family. He will be succeeded by Pierre-Dimitri Gore-Coty, who will oversee the APAC region in addition to Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Barney Harford, COO of Uber, said: &#8220;Amit has been instrumental in growing our rides business — first in India from launch to category leadership, and more recently across the Asia Pacific region.&#8221;
Jain began his stint with Uber in 2015 and started the ride-hailing business in India. During his four-year stint, his portfolio expanded to cover APAC as Uber&#8217;s presence grew regionally. Today, Uber&#8217;s APAC rides cover India, South Asia, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Australia.
Going forward, Uber said it will continue to &#8216;unlock opportunity markets&#8217; like Japan and South Korea, while continuing strong momentum in India and Australia.
&#8220;Uber remains deeply committed to the Asia Pacific region and under Pierre’s leadership will continue to invest in our people, products and partnerships,” said Harford.
The announcement comes at a time when the company has adopted a restructuring exercise to bring in synergies in markets that are similar to each other. For instance, India has greater similarities to the markets in Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya and Tanzania – all part of sub-Saharan Africa &#8211; than it is to the APAC region. Uber is reportedly in the process of integrating the two regions to generate better synergies between its business and products.
One example of this is Uber Lite, which caters to users with slower internet speeds. The product was first developed in India and then was launched in 20 other markets. Similarly, high-capacity vehicles, which have been launched in Egypt, are expected to be introduced in India to test their potential.

Pierre-Dimitri Gore-Coty, who heads Uber's EMEA rides business, will also take charge of the Asia-Pacific business.
