After a series of markdowns, US-based investment firm <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/vanguard" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Vanguard Group</a> marked up the valuation of two Indian Unicorns <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/flipkart" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Flipkart</a> and<a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/ola" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"> Ola</a>.
According to a recent <a style="color: #000080;" href="https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/52848/000093247117004709/world_final.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">regulatory filing</a> by Vanguard World Fund, Indian e-commerce giant Flipkart&#8217;s valuation has been raised by up to 64 per cent, while that of transport hailing service major Ola, run by ANI Technologies, was bumped up by 12 per cent.
As per the SEC filings, Vanguard World Fund has raised the value of Flipkart&#8217;s series-G shares by 57 per cent to $107.78 for the quarter ending May as compared to $68.73 per share during the previous quarter. Flipkart&#8217;s series-H shares have been marked up 64 per cent from $77.71 to $128.01 during the same period.
At the same time, Ola&#8217;s valuation was moved up by 12 per cent from $187.47 to $209.56 by the fund.
The report comes in as a boost to Ola, which had suffered a mark down in its valuation by 40 per cent in February. The company is in the process of raising an investment round, which has reportedly already garnered $400 million from Ratan Tata’s <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://dealstreetaisa.com/tag/rnt-capital" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">RNT Capital Advisers</a>,<a style="color: #000080;" href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/falcon-edge" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"> Falcon Edge Capital</a> and <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/softbank" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">SoftBank Group Corp</a>.
Flipkart on the other hand, recently bagged a massive $1.4 billion funding from <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/microsoft" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Microsoft</a>, <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/tencent" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Tencent</a> and <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/ebay" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">eBay</a>, at a valuation of around $11.6 billion, which was lower than the $15.2 billion valuation it had gotten in its previous round in July 2015.
Both the Bengaluru-based companies have been trying to compete with their respective American rivals&#8211;<a style="color: #000080;" href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/amazon" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Amazon</a> and <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/uber" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Uber</a>&#8211;that are aggressively pumping in funds to capture the Indian market.
In November 2016, a Morgan Stanley mutual fund had marked Flipkart to as low as $52.13 per share pegging its valuation at $5.6 billon.
“Ola Cabs fell in value after raising additional capital from SoftBank. While Ola has a market-leading position in India, it faces competition from Uber; for long-term growth, the company needs the resources of an investor like SoftBank,“ said Vanguard World Fund&#8217;s filing in February.
