US law firm <a href="http://www.morganlewis.com/" target="_blank">Morgan, Lewis &amp; Bockius</a> will establish a Singapore office, merging with Stamford Law Corp and rebranding as Morgan Lewis Stamford.
Morgan, Lewis and Bockius is the largest US law firm by numbers, with more than 2000 lawyers globally. Its Singapore office, operating under the brand of Morgan Lewis Stamford, will act as a launchpad for further expansion, facilitating market penetration activities in Southeast Asian and Indian markets. The merger will take effect from April 1.
With 80 Stamford lawyers being added to their numbers, Morgan Lewis, which has offices in Tokyo and Beijing, has stated its intention to establish a “business transactions, litigation, and arbitration powerhouse to serve clients with strategic interest in Singapore and across the Asian market”, leveraging on Singapore&#8217;s <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_rankings_of_Singapore#Economy" target="_blank">reputation for business legislation and efficiency</a>, as well as Singapore&#8217;s status as the <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.whitecase.com/files/upload/fileRepository/2010International_Arbitration_Survey_Choices_in_International_Arbitration.pdf" target="_blank">arbitration hub of the Asia-Pacific</a>.
While London is the preferred destination for arbitration globally, Singapore has emerged as the regional leader in Asia for commercial arbitration. Morgan, Lewis &amp; Bockius is known for its labour and employment practice, and this expansion into Asia follows the acquisition of the majority of partners from Boston law firm Bingham McCutchen in November 2014. 
With the boom in e-commerce and Southeast Asia <a style="color: #000080;" href="https://www.techinasia.com/asias-tech-industry-enter-golden-age/" target="_blank">emerging as a growth engine</a> in recent times, it seems that the merger between Stamford Law Corp is a strategic investment that comes at an opportune time. The growing economy and the exit of an older generation of business owners creates more opportunities in the M&amp;A space &#8211; leading to more opportunities for arbitration.
