Canadian private equity firm <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/stories/canada-based-valhalla-new-fund-140098/">Valhalla Private Capital</a> is seeking to raise $25 million for its first Southeast Asia-focused fund by 2020, president Jan Lederman told DealStreetAsia.
The fund, which was officially launched in Canada last December, has raised a total of $500,000 so far from Canadian angel investors as well as high net-worth individuals. Valhalla expects to raise a total of $1 million by the end of this year.
“We are now talking to investors from Asia to join our Southeast Asia fund,” Lederman said.
Valhalla plans to primarily invest in startups at the seed stage across Southeast Asia with ticket sizes of less than $1 million.
The firm will prioritise committing capital to startups from Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar. At the same time, Lederman said the firm had received interesting offers to join funding rounds in companies from Singapore, Indonesia as well as India. She further said that in addition to equity investments, the firm was open to debt or convertible debt investment schemes.
Its investment period will be 3-5 years and the firm aims to pick minority stakes in the companies it invests in, and forge strategic partnerships with startup founders, she added.
The first $500,000 it has raised has been invested in Vietnam-based 411BikeRepair. The fund is committed to investing up to $1.2 million in 411BikeRepair in four stages, Lederman added.
The firm said its Vietnam investment was based on the prospects that motorbikes repair services offered, as the country had the second-highest density of motorbikes after Taiwan. Lederman said that 411BikeRepair had aggressive expansion plans as it wants to launch one new outlet per week in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. Its target is to open 50 new outlets in 2020.
