Victor Cui returns to ONE Championship to drive MMA firm's US push

ONE Championship’s co-founder and former chief executive officer (CEO) Victor Cui has returned to the mixed martial arts (MMA) firm to lead its push into the US market.

He resumes his previous role as CEO of International at ONE Championship after concluding a nearly two-year stint with the Edmonton Elks as its president and CEO. Edmonton Elks is a professional Canadian football team based in Edmonton, Alberta.

Victor Cui co-founded ONE Championship in June 2011 and spent five-and-a-half years building ONE as its CEO and board director. The Canadian national thereafter took on a variety of leadership positions including CEO of ONE International, Head of China, and CEO of ONE Elite Agency.

Cui left ONE’s board of directors in September 2020 but remains a shareholder of the firm.

According to a LinkedIn post by ONE Group CEO Chatri Sityodtong, Cui will spearhead ONE’s expansion in the US in addition to other markets.

“We were together on Day ONE of this crazy adventure and it is only fitting that Victor returns to lead the charge in the world’s biggest sports market,” he wrote. Sityodtong further added that ONE plans to execute 61 live events in 2024, and broadcast live every week to over 190 countries around the world.

“Today I’m excited to return to ONE and lead one of our most challenging goals to date – our entry and success into the US market and our global expansion,” wrote Cui in a separate LinkedIn note.

The Singapore-based MMA firm is eyeing at least 4 live shows in the US in 2024, including Denver, Arizona and Florida. It recently concluded the ONE 165 live event in Tokyo on January 28 and will proceed to run its next major event, ONE 166: Qatar in Doha’s Lusail Sports Arena on March 1.

Cui’s return to ONE comes amid several senior departures from ONE’s leadership bench.

These include ONE’s group chief operating officer Hari Vijayarajan; head of corporate strategy and technology Niharika Singh; as well as its head of analytics and insights and vice president Jane Guo.

Vijayarajan confirmed his departure earlier this month on Linkedin, sharing that he will take on the role of CEO at Reebelo, a regional marketplace for refurbished tech devices & lifestyle products.
