Vietnamese conglomerate <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/tag/Vingroup/">Vingroup</a> is said to be nearing a deal to acquire Vien Thong A, one of the first mobile device retailers in the country, according to a source familiar with the matter.
The acquisition of Vien Thong A, which has nearly 200 stores across Vietnam, is expected to mark Vingroup’s foray into mobile device retail.
DEALSTREETASIA has learnt that many employees of Vien Thong A have been informed about this deal while some departments have initiated an integration exercise. It is expected that the acquisition is likely to be completed next month.
When contacted by this portal, a Vingroup spokesperson neither confirmed nor denied the information and said the group had no comments to make at this time.
Vien Thong A deputy general director Huynh Viet Anh also did not deny this information but declined to reveal the acquisition value when asked by local media.
Earlier this year, this portal had reported that Vingroup was exploring an investment into Vien Thong A. The market had been abuzz with rumours that VinPro had picked up a stake in Vien Thong A a few months earlier. However, one of the two people said the retailer is currently considering an investment in Vien Thong A.
Established in November 1997, Vien Thong A is a well-known local brand after Mobile World and FPT Shop.
In June, Vingroup announced its foray into smartphone manufacturing and research in artificial intelligence (AI). The group said in an announcement that it has established VinSmart Co with a charter capital of VND3 trillion ($131.54 million) to produce smartphones and other smart electronic devices.
VinSmart will be located in the port city of northern Haiphong province where it also conducts research on AI and new generation materials.
The country’s smartphone market is driven by the fast-growing $100-150 price segment which contributes almost a third of shipments. The premium smartphone segment (&gt;$400) continues to do well in Vietnam, mainly driven by Samsung and Apple.
M&amp;A in this vertical remains robust. Last year, Malaysia’s Creador-backed Mobile World acquired 95.2 per cent of Hanoi-based electronics retailer Tran Anh Digital World.
Thailand retailer Central Group earlier announced the acquisition of 49 per cent of NKT New Solution and Technology Development Investment JSC, through its unit Power Buy. The Vietnamese company is the owner of the well-known electronics retailer Nguyen Kim.
