Singapore-based global warehouse giant <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/tag/glp/">GLP </a>has backed a $97-million Series C funding round in Next Trucking (NEXT), a logistics platform that matches carriers with shippers, according to a release.
Brookfield Asset Management Inc.’s venture investment arm led the Series C funding round along with <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/tag/Sequoia-Capital">Sequoia Capital</a> and other backers.
NEXT offers an end-to-end logistics solution that combines a freight marketplace with over 16,000 drivers, company-owned assets, and strategic partnerships to provide customers with services from OTR to drayage and warehousing.
NEXT’s app seeks to provide greater visibility on cargo movements at the nation’s busiest container shipping complex. Seaport terminals tend to be particularly opaque points in many supply chains, said Josh Raffaelli, a managing director with Brookfield Ventures.
The funds raised will be used for hiring more engineers to build out its new “Relay” program and add sales and operations staff to expand the business, all while expanding its footprint to a handful of other port markets.
NEXT had previously raised around $27.3 million, most of which arrived via its Series B round last January.
GLP, which is Asia’s top logistics facility provider, recently set up its third Japan-focused logistics real estate fund – GLP Japan Development Partners III (GLP JDP III)  – that is seeking to invest a whopping $5.6 billion (JPY 625 billion).
It earlier along with India-focused private equity firm Everstone launched a $500-million investment platform focused on the logistics sector in India.
GLP invested in US-based supply chain solutions provider Tompkins International along with G7 – the largest telematics platform provider in China used by 90 per cent of China’s largest trucking companies – amongst other investments.
GLP now manages $50 billion in realty and PE assets, has 2,900 completed properties in 1,200 logistics parks globally. In 2017, it had followed a similar pattern by entering Europe with the acquisition of Gazeley, a developer, investor and manager of logistics warehouses and distribution parks.
