EQT will become the majority shareholder of Melbourne Storm, expanding the Swedish investment firm’s presence in sports through its Mid-Market Opportunities strategy.
The financial terms of the transaction remain undisclosed. The deal remains subject to approval from the Australian Rugby League Commission, according to a release.
EQT was selected following a global process to find a strategic partner for the Australian rugby league club, with the investment aimed at supporting its football programme, player development and commercial growth.
The firm will join the club’s existing ownership group and, subject to regulatory approval, take a seat on its board. Matt Tripp will remain chairman, while CEO Justin Rodski, Head Coach Craig Bellamy and Director of Football Frank Ponissi will continue in their current roles.
The investment gives EQT exposure to one of Australia’s most prominent sporting franchises as the firm builds on its existing sports portfolio and expertise.
EQT owns IMG Academy, the US-based sports training and education business, giving the firm experience across athlete performance, sports science, strength and conditioning, nutrition, mental performance and youth development. Melbourne Storm said EQT will also bring digital and data capabilities, as well as a broader network across sports, media and technology.
The investment firm plans to support Storm across several areas, including strengthening the football programme and player pathways, improving the matchday and fan experience, expanding commercial sponsorships and global partnerships, and supporting the club’s role in the Victorian community.
“Melbourne Storm is an exceptional Club, with a proud football culture, strong leadership and a deep connection with its supporters and the community in Victoria,” said Alexander Hansen, managing director and sports and education investment lead at EQT in Asia Pacific.
For EQT, the transaction adds to its growing focus on sports as an investment sector, where professional teams and related businesses offer opportunities to apply expertise in areas including data, digitalisation, media, and commercial development.
The club said it will continue operating under its existing leadership and ownership structure until the transaction receives the necessary approval and achieves completion.
