Grab&#8217;s chief technology officer (CTO) for core technologies and transport, Mark Porter, is leaving the Southeast Asian decacorn.
This comes roughly one year after the departure of former group CTO Theo Vassilakis in April 2019. Vassilakis had <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/stories/grab-cto-132271/">relinquished his CTO position in April last year</a> but remained an advisor at the Singapore-based company.
Porter <a href="https://www.mongodb.com/blog/post/next-chapter-delighting-customers">wrote in a blog post</a> that he will be assuming the CTO role at NASDAQ-listed SaaS firm MongoDB on July 20. He explained in an email statement to DealStreetAsia that he had chosen to take up this job because it would base him closer to home in Seattle.
&#8220;It has been both humbling and rewarding to be part of Grab&#8217;s mission to improve the quality of life for millions, and I walk away a better person and leader for it. Grab has some of the best tech talent and leaders I&#8217;ve had the privilege to work with, and my time here has only reinforced my belief in the company, the mission, and the ultimate success of Grab,” wrote Porter.
Grab shared that it is not actively looking for a replacement, but emphasised its strong leadership team comprising Suthen Thomas, CTO of Deliveries &amp; Ads, Vikas Agrawal, CTO of Grab Financial Group, and Jerald Singh, Group Head of Product, Design &amp; Analytics.
“Mark has made a personal decision that puts the needs of his family first, and we respect and support that&#8230;We are sad to see Mark go and are grateful for his contributions to Grab. We will stay the course with our ambitions &#8211; focusing on using our platform and tech to find ways for even the smallest micro-entrepreneur or business to improve their livelihoods,” said Tan Hooi Ling, co-founder of Grab.
Porter spent two years at Grab where he led its technology teams across Singapore, Seattle, Beijing, Bangalore, Kuala Lumpur, Taipei, Romania, Ho Chi Minh City and Jakarta.
Prior to this, he spent over five years at AWS in Seattle where he was General Manager for Amazon RDS, Amazon Aurora and Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL. Porter is also a board member and advisor on several firms including MongoDB, Splyt and MariaDB Corporation.

Porter will be assuming the CTO role at NASDAQ-listed SaaS firm MongoDB on July 20.
