Financial details regarding the target fund size remain undisclosed.
The investor <a style="color: #000080;" href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/stories/gree-vr-capital-rebrands-to-gfr-fund-launches-new-18m-ar-vr-fund-92789/">announced</a> the close of its first vehicle at $18.3 million. The GFR Fund series invests in early-stage virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) companies.
Limited partners of the first fund include GREE, Colopl VR Fund, mixi Inc, Maruhan, Yahoo Japan and Akatsuki. In February 2018, when GREE VR Capital announced the close of this fund, it had invested in 17 startups after two years of inception.
The portfolio includes VRChat, SPACES, Sliver.tv, Littlstar, Insidemaps, YBVR, Immersv, Experiment 7, TheWaveVR, Sturfee, InsiteVR, Streem, DottyAR, Upload and Torch3D.
Lately, it has joined a $3-million seed round in Phiar, a navigation app for drivers.
The VC firm aims to help American startups gain traction among Japanese investors and market leaders. GFR Fund is led by a team of GREE executives with experience investing in Asia.
&#8220;We are committed to providing the expertise and guidance needed to help our portfolio companies interact with other investors, and drive strategic partnerships with U.S. and Asian corporations that can help them grow and succeed,&#8221; Teppei Tsutsui, CEO and managing director of GFR Fund, had said in a press release last year.
The firm also focuses on enterprise applications such as AR Cloud, navigation, advertising, social media, and consumer content via smartphones or AR glasses.
In May 2018, GFR Fund joined hands with The Virtual Reality Fund and Super Ventures to host the Global AR Online Pitch Event, the world’s first of its kind, for AR startups across the globe.
