China-based <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/tag/hosen-capital/" target="_blank">Hosen Capital</a> has closed Hosen Fund III with a corpus of $440 million. The fund, which focuses on food and agribusiness, raised the funds after eight months in the market.
This  development was first <a style="color: #000080;" href="https://www.privateequityinternational.com/news/north-america/2017-03-02/hosen-capital-holds-final-close-on-fund-iii-%E2%80%93-exclusive/#sthash.B1ewvyk4.dpuf" target="_blank">reported</a> by Private Equity International.
Hosen Capital is a private equity firm established by New Hope Group, the largest agricultural conglomerate in China. Its is headquartered in Beijing with offices in Shanghai, Chengdu and Guangzhou and manages both RMB and USD-denominated funds, with a total size equivalent to approximately RMB 5 billion ($724.9 million), according to its website.
The firm capitalises on food consumption, which is claimed as the largest component of household expenditures in China and adjacent factors linked to food safety, food quality, supply chain upgrade, food technology and modern retail. Its founding partners are <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://linkedin.com/in/alexzhang" target="_blank">Alex Zhang</a> and Chris Wang.
Mitsui &amp; Co, Singapore&#8217;s state investment fund Temasek Holdings, the IFC and ADM are among the founding investors of Hosen Capital, which makes growth and buyout investments in the agribusiness, food, biotech and financial service spaces. It is also reported to be the largest shareholder of China Minsheng Bank.
In August 2016, DEALSTREETASIA <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/stories/50725-50725/" target="_blank">reported</a> that <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/ifc" target="_blank">International Finance Corporation (IFC)</a>, the private lending arm of the <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/world-bank" target="_blank">World Bank Group</a>, was looking to commit as much as $30 million to Chinese private equity firm Hosen Capital’s third investment fund, which was targeting to raise $400 million of commitments.
It was then reported that IFC’s proposed investment would not exceed 20 per cent of the total commitments of the fund. Based on <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/stories/chinas-new-hope-accelerating-fund-raising-for-future-acquisitions-33199/" target="_blank">earlier developments</a>, this fund is likely to finance overseas acquisitions.
Chinese enterprises have been aggressively engaging in M&amp;A activity abroad, but <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.cnbc.com/2017/03/02/china-buying-less-hollywood-but-more-of-everything-else.html" target="_blank">capital controls have led to reductions in Chinese outbound investments</a>. 2016 was particularly notable for the acquisition of several Hollywood assets by Chinese enterprises.
In an exchange with CNBC, Evan Medeiros, managing director and Asia practice head at consultancy Eurasia Group, explained: &#8220;The government approves deals that are core to the business of the Chinese firm — to make sure they are not disguising capital flight as a legitimate acquisition. They are not targeting entertainment companies per se.&#8221;
