Denial-of-service attacks are a form of online hacking that floods a company&#8217;s servers with bogus requests from multiple sites. Genuine customers are then unable to access any of the services they paid for. Such an attack does not compromise customer data.
Vijay Sundaram, chief strategy officer at the California-based organisation, said in a post that attacks started at 8.15 am Pacific Time on November 4th and has since continued. &#8220;The attack was accompanied by threats and a blackmail attempt at extortion to prevent ongoing attacks.&#8221;
The company claimed that all customer data is secure, but they might be difficult to access. &#8220;This is like a crowd of people standing around the entrance to your bank, preventing your entry. Your money is in there and safe, you just can’t get at it until we have them all moved,&#8221; Sundaram said.
However, customers were complaining, on its <a style="color: #000080;" href="https://twitter.com/zoho" target="_blank">Twitter</a> and <a style="color: #000080;" href="https://www.facebook.com/zoho/?fref=ts" target="_blank">Facebook</a> pages that their business was getting affected. Others backed the company as it tried to restore normalcy to its services.
Founded by Suresh Vembu, Zoho is among the pioneers in the Software as a Service (SaaS) space, and has its development, sales and support operations in Chennai, India and has its head office in Pleasanton, California. It provides a suite of business, collaboration and productivity applications including Customer Support, CRM, App Creator among others. At the time of writing, five of its services, including email, were down.
The company has since managed to get some of its apps working, and warned that more attacks might be coming. &#8220;In the meantime, things will be rough for you, and you have our deepest apologies. The most unfortunate part is that we cannot tell you exactly when everything will be back to normal. We simply cannot know,&#8221; Sundaram said in his <a style="color: #000080;" href="https://www.zoho.com/service-updates/blog/zoho-services-under-criminal-attack.html?utm_content=bufferbcf45&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer" target="_blank">latest update</a>.
