Meralco chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan earlier disclosed in a media briefing that they are considering not just utility grade solar, but solar rooftops, and they might enter the business via their renewable energy (RE) unit which they plan to launch this year.
Pangilinan added the planned RE unit could also venture into battery storages equipped with the solar rooftops.

However, Pangilinan made it clear recently that the RE unit will not be a subsidiary of Meralco&#8217;s power generation subsidiary the Meralco PowerGen Corp or MGen.
The listed power firm revealed in the past that it was looking to develop wind, natural gas, run-of-river, and other hydro projects.

As of August this year, the <a style="color: #000080" href="www.doe.gov.ph">Department of Energy</a> has awarded 682 RE contracts, consisting of 412 hydropower projects, 104 solar, 64 biomass, 51 for wind, and 43 for geothermal and eight for ocean energy.
DOE said all RE contracts have a potential generating capacity of 13,574.68 megawatts, although installed capacity was then placed at only 2,912.01 MW.
Meralco&#8217;s last trading price decreased 1.46 per cent or P4.80 to close at P324.
