Singapore-based cybersecurity startup SquareX has secured $6 million in seed funding, show regulatory filings accessed by DealStreetAsia.
The startup, which was founded by the well-known security researcher and trainer Vivek Ramachandran, bagged the capital from two funds named SEA Seed Investment I and SC SEA Investments I, its filings with Singapore&#8217;s Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA) show.
DealStreetAsia understands that the vehicles are affiliated with Sequoia Southeast Asia.
DealStreetAsia has reached out to Sequoia Capital and Ramachandran for comment.
Little is known about the firm since it remains in stealth mode. The only tidbits available are from Ramachandran&#8217;s posts on LinkedIn, where he announced the venture two months ago. &#8220;I&#8217;ve spent the past two decades breaking security and teaching others how to do it. I plan to use this experience at SquareX to attack internet-scale problems for the next decade and beyond. We hold a contrarian view on the current generation of consumer security products — this is where we will start!&#8221; he wrote in the post.
Some of the things SquareX seeks to do, according to its founder&#8217;s social media posts, are making browsers secure and rendering browser fingerprinting — an industry term used to refer to the many tracking techniques websites use to collect information about their users — ineffective.
Ramachandran is known in the industry for his work on wireless security attacks, including the Caffe-Latte attack. He previously founded Pentester Academy, a cybersecurity skilling platform that offered training to professionals from government agencies, Fortune 500 companies and smaller enterprises. Pentester Academy, which was part of Sequoia Surge&#8217;s third cohort, was acquired by information technology training firm INE in 2021.
