HIghway1, a US-based hardware accelerator, has entered into a partnership with local makerspace OneMaker Group (OMG), based at the National Design Centre. This marks a milestone for the Singaporean hardware segment of the startup ecosystem. Other hardware accelerators and investors in the city-state include HaxAsia and Ruvento Ventures.
The emergence of the maker movement and hardware renaissance in the region, in addition to an increasing number of individuals gaining interest in the creation of hardware products for personal and commercial purposes has helped propel growth in Singapore and the region. This is despite the hollowing out of much of the engineering-related sectors in recent decades, as China displaced other countries as a manufacturing hub.
