Anand Sanwal, the CEO and Founder of venture capital analytics firm CB Insights, sees venture capital in Asia benefiting from technology adoption, with large enterprises from India and China increasingly expanding beyond their home markets and into Southeast Asia as they seek growth.
At the same time, he pointed out that the region presented a mixed bag in terms of return on capital employed. “VC investments, at least in dollars, are centred on major hubs like Beijing, Shangai and even Bangalore. The reality, however, is that Bangalore, and India in general, hasn’t been a great place to-date for VC investment. A lot of VC money has been seduced by the giant market in India only to go there to ultimately die,” he said.
