Singapore Venture Funding Landscape 2022

‘Singapore Venture Funding Landscape 2022’ is the definitive analysis of the venture funding ecosystem in Singapore. Science and technology are an integral part of the growth and vibrancy of the city-state, which attracts the largest amount of investment in Southeast Asia.

In the latest report, DealStreetAsia and Enterprise Singapore examine the venture capital market activity of the first nine months of 2022. The period has been characterised by macroeconomic headwinds, such as rising inflation and interest rates. However, Singapore’s venture-backed companies are well placed to navigate the challenges thanks to a robust infrastructure, supportive government policies and strong stakeholder commitment towards cutting-edge innovations.

In this backdrop, venture capital funds have been cautious about making new investments, and reassessed the needs and strategies of their existing portfolios. Even so, Singapore accounted for nearly 60% of deal value across Southeast Asia.

Equity funding rounds in Singapore grew 6% in the first nine months of 2022 over the same period last year. At US$8.1 billion, there was a minor dip in the value of investments in the first nine months of 2022, compared to a year ago. This is a marked change from the mood in 2021.

The report contextualises the data findings under the four pillars of Singapore’s Research, Innovation and Enterprise 2025 Plan. While the Human Health and Potential domain saw a drop in value of investments, there are upticks in the value of deals under Smart Nation and Digital Economy, Manufacturing, Trade and Connectivity, as well as Urban Solutions and Sustainability.

Finally, don’t miss the buzz in Singapore’s deep-tech ecosystem, which crossed the US$1 billion mark for the first time in the first nine months of 2022.

There is an opportunity to tap into new areas of innovation with solid fundamentals. Deep tech startups in Singapore are primed to grow with interest from a varied set of investors, including family offices. Investors say this will boost business in emerging segments like alternative protein, sustainability, as well as primary and preventive healthcare.
