Mitsui and Kirin have entered a strategic investment in US-based health company Thorne while Nissan has forged a new partnership with UK-based Ceres Power.
<h3>Mitsui, Kirin make strategic investment in Thorne</h3>
Tokyo-based <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/tag/Mitsui/">Mitsui &amp; Co</a> and <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/tag/Kirin/">Kirin Holdings Company</a> have made a strategic investment in US-based health and technology company Thorne to help expand its personalized health technology platform and products and to grow the business in Asia.
According to an official release, Mitsui and Kirin now join Helsinn and Thorne’s management team as investors replacing private equity firms WestView Capital Partners and Tudor Ventures (now operating as Spring Lake Equity Partners).
This fresh round follows Mitsui’s strategic investment in Thorne last year which aimed to expand business in the United States and Japan.
Through this joint investment, Mitsui and Kirin will strengthen their initiatives in the field of health, such as preventive and daily health management, which are becoming increasingly important societal issues also in the US and Japan.
Kirin Holdings manufactures and sells alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and pharmaceuticals and biochemicals in Japan and internationally.
Mitsui &amp; Co is a diversified global trading, investment, and service enterprise. Most recently, it made a $210-million new investment in Columbia Asia Group, one of the region’s largest and fastest-growing healthcare companies.
<h3>Nissan enters into a new partnership with UK-based Ceres Power</h3>
Japan’s <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/tag/Nissan/">Nissan Motor Co</a> has entered into a new partnership with UK-based Ceres Power, a developer of the SteelCell fuel cell technology for EV applications, according to an announcement.
Ceres Power will receive the UK government funding valued through the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) for the project, which is being carried out in partnership with Nissan and The Welding Institute (TWI).
The new partnership builds on the successful joint development with Japanese car giant Nissan over the past two years and sees Ceres Power accelerating commercialization of its SteelCell fuel cell technology in automotive markets, Ceres said.
This comes soon after Ceres Power’s recent announcement of a strategic partnership with China’s Weichai Power to develop its technology for China’s fast-growing electric powered bus market.
Nissan Motor Co in July canceled a potential $1 billion sale of its electric battery business to GSR Capital, citing lack of funds with the Chinese investment firm to make the purchase.
The Japanese automaker had announced in August last year its plan to sell Automotive Energy Supply Corp, which includes battery plants in the United States, England and Japan, for an undisclosed sum.
