Gobi Partners has appointed a former Sony chairman as its advisor for the Japan market, while Oaktree Capital has relocated an executive to Hong Kong.
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">Gobi Partners appoints advisor for Japan</h3>
Shanghai- and Kula Lumpur-based venture capital firm <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=Gobi+Partners" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Gobi Partners</a> has announced the appointment of Nobuyuki Idei, founder and CEO of advisory company Quantum Leaps Corporation, as its advisor for the Japan market.
Idei was the chairman of Sony Corporation until 2005.
“Idei-san has been a long-time friend to our firm, and we are honored to have him as our Advisor for the Japanese market,” said Kay-Mok Ku, managing partner for Gobi.
Gobi will be working with Idei to identify Japanese startups that have the potential to expand their business to Southeast Asia. His appointment is in line with Gobi’s “Crouching Panda, Hidden Tapir (Southeast Asian economies)” strategy to connect the venture capital ecosystem of Northeast and Southeast Asia.
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">Oaktree relocates distress head to Hong Kong office</h3>
Global alternative investment management firm <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=Oaktree+Capital+Group" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Oaktree Capital Group</a> announced that the firm will relocate Pedro Urquidi, co-portfolio manager and head of distressed debt for Europe and Asia, to the firm’s Hong Kong office.
The relocation will take effect in early April.
Based in Hong Kong, Urquidi will continue to lead Oaktree’ s overall non-US distressed debt business and at the same time, help grow its Asian investment platform.
Urquidi has been with Oaktree since 2005 and prior to that, worked as head of Morgan Stanley’s European Special Situations Group. He also had the experience of working in New York and Hong Kong as a trader in Morgan Stanley’s Global High Yield group.
Oaktree, which has $120 billion in assets under management, operates out of its Asian offices in Beijing, Hong Kong, Seoul, Singapore, Shanghai and Tokyo.
